There is evidence of a precursor to the modern Sol-fa scale dating back to Greco-Roman periods. It is a method of music conceptualization that places emphasis on the fact that a scale in any of the Keys can be represented by using placeholder symbols. Single syllable sounds to represent each of the 8 tones in the scale. The melodic structure of this well-known piece is a perfect springboard into discovering intervals and harmonic progressions.

The ubiquitous Christmas standard goes down a treat with children. Use it at any time of the year to help beginner music theory students to understand the mapping of the note names on the stave.

We have him to thank for the solfege system in music. Do — Make a fist with your palm facing down. Re — Straighten your fingers keeping them together , and bring your hand up to make a degree angle with the ground. Mi — Keep the same hand shape, but move your hand so that it is parallel with the ground. Do is normally C, but if you are singing in a higher or lower key it depends on your starting note, so really Do is just the first note of the scale.

On the bass clef, the notes going through the lines on the staff from the bottom up are G, B, D, F and A. The notes going through the spaces on the bass clef from the bottom up are A, C, E, and G.

Those notes repeat across the piano. The treble clef spaces correspond to the notes F, A, C, and E. Beginning on the bottom of the staff and going up, the notes spell face. Those below the staff are the lower notes, while those above are higher notes. As a beginner, the first leger line you should learn is middle C. On the grand staff, middle C is located between the treble and bass staff, as shown in the diagram on the right.
